Alan Greaves was 'shining light' of Sheffield community, says bishop

Alan Greaves

The bishop of Sheffield has spoken of his shock and outrage over the murder of Alan Greaves, the church organist who was killed on his way to a Christmas Eve midnight mass.

Speaking at St Saviour's church, High Green, where Greaves was a member and also a lay preacher, Steven Croft said Sheffield had lost a "shining light".

"There is a sense of shock and a sense of outrage, not just in this community but across the whole city of Sheffield," he said. "Alan was the victim of a brutal attack as he was on his way to church on Christmas Eve, as he was walking to this church to bear witness to his deep Christian faith. There will be immense grief for those who knew Alan well, which includes many in this church and community."

He went on to speak of the love and support that has been offered to the family and also appreciation for the medical teams that tried to save Greaves's life.

"And in the midst of all this, I am sure, many will be giving thanks for Alan himself, for all he showed us of God's grace and love," he said. "There will be occasions in the future for many generous tributes to be given. Goodness is not as common as it should be and this community and this city have lost a shining light."

Two men are in custody after being arrested on Saturday on suspicion of Greaves's murder. The 68-year-old, a grandfather and father of four, died after sustaining serious head injuries after leaving his home to go to the church. Police said the motive for the attack was unclear.

During the service, Greaves's widow, Maureen, told the congregation: "I won't be able to contact you over the next few days, but I want to thank you for the support you have given me.

"I have prayed constantly for Alan and I know you have too. I have not stopped crying for him and I know you have not stopped either. I have wept over the evil that has been done. I have prayed for you and I know you have prayed for me. You were Alan's Christian family and he loved belonging to this church. I have felt your love towards me."

The Symptoms Of Cervical Cancer | Cervical dysplasia - abnormal ...

Cervical cancer is another form of uterine cancer. It begins in the cells on the surface of the cervix, either on the lower part, or in the upper part of the cervix. It is a slow-growing and malignant cancer. (Malignant simply means that it spreads). The cervix is the connector that connects the uterus to the birth canal, and is actually a part of the uterus.

Cervical cancer is usually the result of the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is spread through sexual contact. The virus can survive in the body for many years before it causes cancer, and in some cases the cancer never develops.

A new vaccine is available to stop the virus, and medical professionals are encouraging young girls and women to get the vaccine. The claim is that by the year 2022 cervical cancers will be reduced due to the vaccine. But the vaccine is still to new, to know about all the possible long-term side-effects it will cause. The best way to be on guard against this cancer is to build up the immune system and eliminate as many risk factors as possible.

Those at highest risk for developing this cancer are young girls who became sexually active before the age of 18, and those who have, or have had numerous partners. Those who smoke, use birth control pill, condoms and tampons are also at a higher risk.

The symptoms of cervical cancer may not appear until the later stages of the cancer, but pre-cancerous cells can be detected with a pap test.

The following symptoms may occur in the more advanced stages of cervical cancer.

- Bleeding in between periods, or after menopause. This can be heavy or light bleeding.

- Pelvic pains which can be dull or sharp pains, and can last for hours.

- A vaginal discharge may also occur, and may be foul smelling, thick, and may contain mucus or blood.

- Leaking of urine or feces from vagina.

- Bleeding after intercourse.

- Pain during intercourse.

- Pain or heavy bleeding while menstruating.

- Pain during urinating can occur if cancer has spread to the bladder.

- Loss of appetite, which can lead to weight loss.

Other symptoms may include fatigue, back pain, leg pain, a single swollen leg, and easy fracturing of the bones.

Treatments are available; one can choose either conventional treatments which consist of chemo, radiation and surgery, or, one can choose to be healed naturally using Chinese medicines, or herbs.

Senators: Hagel would face tough confirmation

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Two senators predicted Sunday that former Sen. Chuck Hagel would face a difficult confirmation if nominated by President Barack Obama to be defense secretary.

Sen. Joe Lieberman, a Connecticut independent who's retiring and wouldn't have a vote, cited Hagel's less-than-hawkish positions on Iran. Lieberman told CNN's "State of the Union" that it would be "a very tough confirmation process," and "there are reasonable questions to ask and that Chuck Hagel will have to answer."

On NBC's "Meet the Press," Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said it would be "a challenging nomination."

"I don't think he's going to get many Republican votes," Graham said.

Hagel, 66, is considered the leading candidate to replace Leon Panetta at the Pentagon, although a number of GOP senators have expressed reservations about a nomination. Their concerns largely center on Hagel's past comments about Israel and Iran. Outside groups have suggested that based on Hagel's remarks, he isn't sufficiently supportive of Israel, an important ally in the Middle East.

Opponents point to his votes against sanctions on Iran and letters that Hagel signed, along with ones he declined to add his name to, many of those favored by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the powerful pro-Israel lobby. In August 2006, Hagel refused to sign a letter pressing the European Union to declare Hezbollah a terrorist organization, one of 12 senators who balked. In 2007, he sent a letter to Bush urging talks with Iran.

Hagel, a decorated Vietnam War veteran, has favored diplomacy over military action with Iran, and criticized talk of a strike by either the United States or Israel against Iran.

Lieberman said sanctions are the only way to change Tehran's behavior "short of war." Lieberman said that Hagel had "some very outlying votes" against economic penalties on Iran over its nuclear program.

Georgia Republican U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson said on ABC's "This Week" that he'll "reserve any judgment until after the hearings we have on confirmation if in fact he is nominated." Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., was non-committal about Hagel, saying she'll see "what happens with these hearings."

Hagel once made reference to the "Jewish lobby" in the United States, a comment that Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., called "inappropriate."

"There's no such thing as a Jewish lobby," McCain said. "There's an Armenian lobby, there's not a Jewish lobby. There's an Israeli lobby. It's called AIPAC, very influential."

At least two other candidates remain under serious consideration ? former Pentagon policy chief Michele Flournoy and Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton Carter.

Asian toad stowaway gets new home in South Africa

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? They say cats have nine lives. Now a Chinese toad has joined that reputed club of wily survivors.

South Africans are marveling at the endurance of a toad that got trapped in a cargo shipment from China to Cape Town after jumping into a porcelain candlestick. South African officials planned to put down the creature from Asia fearing it would cause harm as an invasive species if it were let go in the wild.

But the toad got a last-minute reprieve. Mango Airlines, a South African airline, transported the toad on Friday to Johannesburg for delivery to an animal sanctuary after officials decided to find a way to let the itinerant toad live.

Airline spokesman Hein Keiser says the toad has become a celebrity.

It's nickname? Jack B Nimble.

IMF extends zero interest loans to poor nations

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Poor countries with loans from the IMF can continue to pay no interest until the end of 2014, the Fund's board said on Friday, as their economies are still recovering from the global economic crisis.

The IMF's zero-interest loan program for low-income countries had been set to expire at the end of this year.

"The executive board decision to keep interest rates at zero ... is testament to the Fund's continued support for low-income countries since the global economic crisis hit in 2009," IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde said in a statement.

The IMF decided in 2009 to allow countries eligible for its anti-poverty loan program to pay zero interest on loans in light of the financial crisis.

The Fund also set a target to raise $17 billion to lend to the poorest countries, which are threatened by the risk of euro-zone contagion and by a drop-off in foreign aid after the global recession.

IMF's Lagarde has pushed to meet that goal, seeking to ease concerns that the IMF and donor nations may turn a blind eye to the world's poor as they focus on containing the euro zone crisis.

In September, the IMF said it would distribute a $3.8 billion windfall from gold sales to its 188 member countries if they agreed to commit most of the money to the anti-poverty loan program.

Norovirus Survives Restaurant Dishwashing Protocols

60-Second Science

Dishwashing protocols designed with food-borne bacteria in mind didn't cut the mustard in a test with noroviruses, which cause nasty gastrointestinal illnesses. Karen Hopkin reports

More 60-Second Science

Thinking of eating out over the holidays? Well, you might consider bringing your own plate. Because a new study shows that the typical dishwashing procedures used by most restaurants can?t wash away viruses that can cause some serious stomach distress. Those unsavory findings are served up in the journal PLoS ONE. [Lizanel Feliciano et al., Efficacies of Sodium Hypochlorite and Quaternary Ammonium Sanitizers for Reduction of Norovirus and Selected Bacteria during Ware-Washing Operations]

Food poisoning is no fun. And one potential source of sickness when you dine out is the dinnerware. Plates, forks, and glasses could transfer a bug from contaminated foodstuff or a previous diner to you. Most public eateries follow certain industry guidelines when it comes to cleaning their tableware. But those protocols were designed with foodborne bacteria in mind. So what happens if the infectious agent is viral?

To find out, researchers inoculated cream cheese and milk with either E. coli bacteria or a norovirus, famous for spreading throughout cruise ships. The researchers shmeared the mess over ceramic plates, utensils and glassware?and then put the dirty dishes in the wash. And they found that while the standard detergents did a decent job at sluicing away the E. coli, they didn?t get rid of the dairy-encrusted virus.

So bon appetit.? And caveat emptor.?Karen Hopkin

South African Developer Secures Financing for Retail, Residential ...

December 21, 2012

By Alex Girda, Associate Editor

Nedbank Corporate Property Finance, a Durban-based financial organization, has reportedly provided a Pretoria developer with crucial financing that will be used in the development of two properties. Octodec Investments, a local developer, is working on phase two of the Tiny Town development, a residential and retail project that currently has a 2014 completion date attached. The other project Octodec is working on is the Cambridge Shopping Centre, a commercial development in the city?s central business district. The amount that Nedbank Corporate Property Finance has provided comes in at around $11.5 million, or 100 million South African rand.

Tiny Town was originally conceived in 1929 when it was meant to become an artist?s colony and included a number of residential units and a common garden. Tiny Town was then renovated in 2009 to meet modern expectations, while the overall direction of the area was rebranded while keeping in mind the space?s history and setting. Phase II will include 116 new for-rent residential units. Located in close proximity to the country?s seat of government, the new development will cater to a more exclusive type of resident in terms of its residential component. The project is currently in the town planning stage of development.

The Cambridge Shopping Centre will be located at the intersection of Struben, van der Walt and Bloed streets, in the north-western edge of the city?s central business district, in the immediate vicinity of the Pretoria Zoo, the largest in the country. The retail development already has an anchor tenant in place, in the Cambridge Foods grocery store. The Massmart Group-owned store has signed a ten-year leasing deal at the facility. Not counting the space that Cambridge Foods will be taking over, the retail center will have 11,100 square feet of leasable space, divided into 12 shops. The retail units will feature areas between 516 square feet and 1400 square feet. Some of the other residents of the Cambridge Shopping Centre are already in place, with another large national tenant on the roster being Cash Crusaders. The retail development currently has an attached opening date of February 2013.

Pretoria is one of three capital cities that represent the South African country, the city being the executive capital, making it the de facto capital of the state. It is located in the Gauteng province and has a population of around 500,000.

Possible Re-Introduction!

I am sort of new here! I've been wanting to join a rping site for a while that didn't just involve me and my close friends, so I found this site and apparently I already had an account .-.
So I'm not all that sure if I had an original introduction, but if not, then hello!
My real name is Shayna, but I often go by rred on forums and such, so feel free to call me whichever floats your boat.
A few things about me, I suppose!:
17, female, and have been rping since I was a tyke! I started forum rping when I was around 10 or 11 and fell in love. I still role-play constantly, but my friends' one ongoing rp isn't serious, and the others that are don't last long =/
So that's why I've come here! I have a few rp ideas I've been itching to see come to fruition and I'd like to not be GM for once, heh. Uh . . . I speak a little French, want to be an English teacher, and I really like to write. I think that's it; I suppose if you have any other questions you can ask!

Apple given all clear to launch 3G/4G iPad mini and iPad in China

News

Apple has the all clear to launch the iPad mini and iPad 4 in China after the regulator there cleared China?s regulatory hurdles.

To date only the Wi-Fi versions of the devices are available in China. However, the iPad remains popular, during the third quarter, Apple?s slate grabbed 71.4 percent of the country?s tablet market,?according?to Cnet.

The cellular versions will work on the China Telecom and China Unicom networks,?according?to Chinese site TechWeb. There is no mention of 4G on Apple?s site, although the devices will be able to connect to China?s 4G network, where available.

Apple is yet to reach an agreement to sell the iPhone through China Mobile ? the world?s largest wireless carrier. That mobile carrier has said it will?develop its own company-branded handsets, while hoping to eventually strike a deal with Apple for the iPhone.

China Mobile has 703 million customers, and its subscriber base towers over rivals China Unicom and China Telecom, which together have only 387 million mobile users. At issue is the fact that China Mobile?s 3G network uses a homegrown technology called TD-SCDMA, so the iPhone would have to be redesigned.

Apple launched the iPhone 5 in China?last week and saw 2m sales in the first weekend.

3G penetration in China stands at only about 19% currently,?according?to Trefis.

Reality TV's biggest jaw-droppers of 2012

MTV / TLC / NBC

Jenelle of "Teen Mom 2," Honey Boo Boo, and Conda Britt of "Biggest Loser."

By Anna Chan and Ree Hines, TODAY

Sometimes you just can't script the bizarre things that happen on television. And thanks to reality TV programming -- whether the shows focus on lifestyle or competitions -- the "Oh no they didn't!" moments are seemingly endless. That was certainly the case this year, especially with TLC's introduction to Honey Boo Boo and her clan.?

Though the little tyke and her family generated plenty of talk, they weren't the only ones who left viewers laughing, scratching their heads or fuming.?

'Here Comes Honey Boo Boo'
Nothing could have fully prepared reality TV audiences for the reality of Honey Boo Boo and her family. But ready or not, when the show premiered in August, it was time to redneckognize the fact the bunch wasn't going away any time soon. For some, the fun-loving family's mere prime-time presence made for one great big jaw-dropper. But for those who watched all of the roadkill-munching and mud-flopping action, there was one simple moment that topped them all: When Mama June taught us all to make "sketti." The ingredients? Topping the pasta and meat is a mixture of a massive glob of butter(-like spread) and ketchup -- microwaved to perfection.

'Teen Mom 2'
Amber who? Original "Teen Mom" Amber Portwood made her share of big mistakes prior to putting herself in jail, but rather than that being the end of law-breaking tales for MTV's franchise, "Teen Mom 2's" Jenelle Evans is following in Amber's footsteps and making truly unbelievable decisions when it comes to time behind bars. Some might say she's been even more frustrating to watch than Amber. Case in point? On the Nov. 26 episode, after learning that her probation officer is offering her a 16-day jail sentence instead of a 45-day sentence for violating probation, Jenelle tells her attorney that she can't start serving the day she is supposed to. Her excuse? No, not life-saving surgery. Not child-care issues. What, then? Second row seats for a Ke$ha concert. We kid you not. Jenelle even got "all these feathers" in her hair just to go see her "idol"! (Check out the young mom's 2009 "Tik Tok" video.)

'Toddlers & Tiaras'
It seems safe to say that most moms (and dads, for that matter) don't ever want to see their precious little kids puffing on cigarettes. But then again, most moms aren't trying to win a costumed beauty pageant at any cost. Destiny's mom, however, was. "Toddlers & Tiaras" viewers must have been as shocked as the pageant judges were when they heard Lisa Christian tell her tyke, "Don't forget to smoke!" before the wee one took the stage with a prop cigarette to portray Sandy from "Grease." One judge spoke for everyone when she said of Lisa, "What is she thinking?!" And that was nothing compared to what prosecutor-turned-talk-host Nancy Grace had to say when she booked Lisa on her show.

'The Biggest Loser'
There was no shortage of gasp-worthy moments on "Biggest Loser" this year. In fact, most of those moments centered on outspoken and outrageous contestant Conda Britt. But the participant some viewers (and fellow contestants) called a bully only played a bit part in real the shocker of the season -- the walkout. Yes, the people who were lucky enough to have landed a coveted spot on the weight-loss ranch decided that the reality show just wasn't "fair" (due to an all-too-common twist in the game) and threatened to walk right off the show if things continued as planned. Even more surprising? Two "Losers" actually made good on that threat and threw away their chances to make it to the finals and compete for the $250,000 grand prize or any other prize -- or even the right to just step up on the scales on finale night.

'Project Runway'
There's usually some griping when "Project Runway" asks its designers to create fab looks for non-model-sized women, but that moaning is generally directed at the task. Not so in season 10. Designer Ven Budhu made his frustration known by making jabs at his size 10 model, Terri Herlihy, who was there because her friend submitted her for a glam makeover. After what seemed like endless comments about her size, Terri was fighting back tears, and angry viewers took to social media to blast the designer hopeful for his behavior. After the show aired, Terri told The Clicker just how horrible the experience was, calling it "adult bullying at its best." The show's mentor, Tim Gunn, was also appalled by Ven. The fashion guru said that the editing was "especially kind" to the designer, adding,?"He was especially atrocious."

'Dancing With the Stars'
Boo! Hiss! Those aren't exactly the sounds one expects to hear in the glam and glitz-filled ballroom of "Dancing With the Stars," but for a couple of brief moments in the show's 14th season, that's just what an angry audience delivered all the same. It first happened when head judge Len Goodman and the gang decided to follow up a round of big praise with a round of tiny scores for an excellent team paso doble performance. The in-house crowd let the esteemed panel know just what they thought of that call, as they did again when the judges failed to give Melissa Gilbert and ballroom bad boy Maksim Chmerkovskiy their fair due later in the show.

'Dancing With the Stars' -- again!
Some shows just deliver more surprises than a single entry can cover. Case in point? The second "Dancing With the Stars" season of 2012 might just have topped its own previous ballroom boos when the all-star cast had to say so long to former Cheetah Girl Sabrina Bryan. History repeated itself for the Disney star as she left the bash in week six, following a strong performance, just as she did back season five. Viewers weren't the only ones shocked. Judges Carrie Ann Inaba clutched her gut when the results were announced, while her fellow panelist looked on slack jawed.

Gunmen kill 4 female polio workers in Pakistan

KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) ? A senior health official says gunmen have killed four women working on a government polio vaccination campaign in the Pakistan's largest city, Karachi.

Sagher Ahmed, health minister for surrounding Sindh province, says the gunmen on Tuesday also wounded two men who were with the women.

The Taliban have spoken out against polio vaccination in recent months, claiming the health workers are acting as spies for the U.S. and the vaccine itself causes harm.

Ahmed says the shootings took place in a Karachi area populated by ethnic Pashtuns. The Taliban are a Pashtun movement, and many militants are reported to be hiding in these communities in Karachi.

On Monday, police said a gunman killed a volunteer for the World Health Organization's anti-polio campaign in Karachi.

Nile-like river roves across Saturn's moon Titan

Coursing 400 kilometres towards a dark delta, a river found on Saturn's moon Titan is the longest yet seen outside Earth. Bearing a striking resemblance to the Nile, the river hints at ongoing geological activity on the moon.

Titan is considered to be the most Earth-like extraterrestrial body in the solar system. In addition to its thick atmosphere, the moon boasts mountains, lakes and a liquid cycle akin to Earth's water cycle.

But at -179 ?C, Titan is too cold for flowing water. Instead, liquid hydrocarbons such as ethane and methane fill its lakes and streams.

Finding faults

Spotted by NASA's Cassini spacecraft, the newfound river follows a relatively straight path into one of Titan's large seas, Ligeia Mare. "We think it's raining in the highlands and flowing down into these river valleys," says Thomas Farr of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

The Nile's relatively straight shape is partly controlled by fault lines, which on Earth mark the places where tectonic plates meet. Titan is probably too small to have plates, but the river may also be tracing a fault in the bedrock, says Farr. Pressure could build up on such faults, causing them to shift and form new chasms and lakes, he says.

"Usually when we look at another planet, we're cautioned not to bring our Earth experience too much to bear, because we might fool ourselves," says Farr. "But here we look at a completely alien world and it looks just like the Earth. It's hard to believe."

Obama to speak at Newton, Conn., vigil for victims

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Making a sadly familiar journey, President Barack Obama will attend an evening vigil in Newtown, Conn., to mourn with a town still seeking to comprehend the unimaginable massacre of its children and teachers.

His visit Sunday to this southeastern Connecticut community comes two days after a man opened fire inside Sandy Hook Elementary School killing 26 people, including 20 boys and girls just 6 or 7 years old.

Authorities identified the shooter as Adam Lanza, a 20-year-old who police say first killed his mother before driving to the school, opening fire in two classrooms and then taking his own life.

Obama will visit privately with families of the victims and with emergency personnel who responded to the shootings. He then will then speak at an interfaith vigil at Newtown High School.

Obama could barely contain his emotions Friday, speaking tearfully at the White House and expressing his sympathy as a parent and a president. He reiterated his message Saturday morning in his usual weekend radio address, declaring that "every parent in America has a heart heavy with hurt" and asserting that it was time to "take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this."

For the president, this is the fourth trip of his presidency to a community still grieving from a mass shooting.

Just last summer, Obama went to Aurora, Colo., to visit victims and families after a shooting spree at a movie theater in the Denver suburb left 12 dead. He went to Tucson, Ariz., in January of last year after six people were killed and 13 wounded, including then-Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, outside a grocery store. And in November 2009, Obama traveled to Fort Hood, Texas, to speak at the memorial service for 13 service members who were killed on the post by another soldier.

"As a nation, we have endured far too many of these tragedies in the last few years," Obama said in his radio address Saturday.

The Newtown shootings and Obama's vague but declarative call for "meaningful action" has reignited a debate over gun laws and raised an expectation among gun control advocates that Obama will seek changes. But public opinion in favor of gun control has declined over the years. And while the White House has said Obama stands by his desire to reinstate a ban on military-style assault weapons, he has not pushed Congress to act.

After the Colorado shooting in July, the White House made clear that Obama would not propose new gun restrictions in an election year and said he favored better enforcement of existing laws.

According to the Brady Campaign Against Gun Violence, Obama has signed into law more repeals of federal gun policies than President George W. Bush did during his two terms. Many of those repeals were inserted as amendments to broader, unrelated legislation. The Brady Campaign is named after James Brady, the former White House press secretary who was shot and disabled in the assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan in 1981.

Asteroid Toutatis slowly tumbles by Earth

Dec. 16, 2012 ? Scientists working with NASA's 230-foot-wide (70-meter) Deep Space Network antenna at Goldstone, Calif., have generated a series of radar data images of a three-mile-long (4.8-kilometer) asteroid that made its closest approach to Earth on Dec. 12, 2012.

The radar data images of asteroid Toutatis have been assembled into a short movie, available online at: http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/video/index.php?id=1175 .

The images that make up the movie clip were generated with data taken on Dec. 12 and 13, 2012. On Dec. 12, the day of its closest approach to Earth, Toutatis was about 18 lunar distances, 4.3 million miles (6.9 million kilometers) from Earth. On Dec. 13, the asteroid was about 4.4 million miles (7 million kilometers), or about 18.2 lunar distances.

The radar data images of asteroid Toutatis indicate that it is an elongated, irregularly shaped object with ridges and perhaps craters. Along with shape detail, scientists are also seeing some interesting bright glints that could be surface boulders. Toutatis has a very slow, tumbling rotational state. The asteroid rotates about its long axis every 5.4 days and precesses (changes the orientation of its rotational axis) like a wobbling, badly thrown football, every 7.4 days.

The orbit of Toutatis is well understood. The next time Toutatis will approach at least this close to Earth is in November of 2069, when the asteroid will safely fly by at about 7.7 lunar distances, or 1.8 million miles (3 million kilometers). An analysis indicates there is zero possibility of an Earth impact over the entire interval over which its motion can be accurately computed, which is about the next four centuries.

This radar data imagery will help scientists improve their understanding of the asteroid's spin state, which will also help them understand its interior.

The resolution in the image frames is 12 feet (3.75 meters) per pixel.

NASA detects, tracks and characterizes asteroids and comets passing close to Earth using both ground- and space-based telescopes. The Near-Earth Object Observations Program, commonly called "Spaceguard," discovers these objects, characterizes a subset of them, and plots their orbits to determine if any could be potentially hazardous to our planet.

JPL manages the Near-Earth Object Program Office for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. JPL is a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.

A deeply flavored comfort dish from the forests of Abruzzo | TribLIVE

By Tribune-Review

Published: Saturday, December 15, 2012, 8:54?p.m.
Updated 9 hours ago

This pasta dish is inspired by the region of Abruzzo, among the most mountainous regions in Italy and home of some of the country?s most interesting cooking. In the forests of Abruzzo, foraging reigns supreme.

And, because mushroom season lasts a little longer than it does elsewhere, we have porcini galore for winter ragus.

The brilliance of this dish is the combination of veal, mushrooms and doppio concentrato tomato paste. Together, the three create a depth of flavor more often achieved by reducing sauce for hours on end. The secret is the umami in the dried mushrooms. I chop the porcini finely, and incorporate them into a simple ragu of ground veal and tomato paste. But the important factor is the concentrated flavor of the tea created when soaking the dried fungus in hot water.

I use farfalle ? literally ?butterflies? ? because they hold up to the hefty condiment, but even penne will do. This recipe just might eclipse chicken soup as our go-to comfort food this holiday season.

Mario Batali, owner of Babbo, Lupa, Otto and other restaurants. His latest book is ?Molto Batali.?

Farfelle Abruzzese With Veal, Porcini and Spinach

3 ounces dried porcini mushrooms, soaked in 2 cups hot water for 10 minutes

1?4 cup extra-virgin olive oil

5 medium-size cloves garlic, thinly sliced

11?2 pounds ground veal shoulder

Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

1?4 cup double-concentrated tomato paste

1 cup dry white wine

1 cup basic tomato sauce

Water

11?2 pounds farfalle pasta

8 ounces baby spinach, trimmed

1?2 cup freshly grated Pecorino Romano

Drain the porcini, reserving the soaking liquid, and coarsely chop the porcini. Strain the soaking liquid through a fine-mesh sieve, and set it aside.

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the garlic and cook until it is lightly toasted. Add the veal and the chopped porcini, and cook, stirring, over medium-high heat until the meat is well-browned, for about 10 minutes.

Season with salt and pepper, and add the tomato paste. Cook over high heat, stirring constantly, until the paste turns a rust color, for 5 minutes.

Then add the wine and 1 cup of the strained porcini soaking liquid, and cook for 5 minutes, until the wine has almost completely evaporated.

Add the tomato sauce and reduce the heat to a low simmer.

Bring 8 quarts of water to a boil in a large spaghetti pot, and add 2 tablespoons of salt.

Drop the farfalle into the water and cook for 1 minute less than the package instructions indicate. Just before the pasta is done, carefully ladle 1?4 cup of the cooking water into the veal mixture. Stir the baby spinach into the veal mixture.

Drain the pasta in a colander, and add it to the veal mixture. Toss over medium heat for about 30 seconds, until the pasta is nicely coated.

Pour into a warmed serving bowl and serve immediately, with the grated Pecorino Romano on the side.

Makes 8 to 10 servings as a first course, 6 as a main course.

Warming climate unlikely to cause extinction of ancient Amazon trees, study finds

Warming climate unlikely to cause extinction of ancient Amazon trees, study finds

Friday, December 14, 2012

New genetic analysis has revealed that many Amazon tree species are likely to survive man-made climate warming in the coming century, contrary to previous findings that temperature increases would cause them to die out.

A study, published in the latest edition of Ecology and Evolution, reveals the surprising age of some Amazonian tree species ? more than 8 million years ? and therefore shows that they have survived previous periods as warm as many of the global warming scenarios forecast for the year 2100.

The authors write that, having survived warm periods in the past, the trees will likely survive future warming, provided there are no other major environmental changes. Although extreme droughts and forest fires will impact Amazonia as temperatures rise, the trees will likely endure the direct impact of higher temperatures. The authors recommend that as well as reducing greenhouse gas emissions to minimise the risk of drought and fire, conservation policy should remain focused on preventing deforestation for agriculture and mining.

The study is at odds with other recent research, based on ecological niche-modeling scenarios, which predicted tree species' extinctions in response to relatively small increases in global average air temperatures.

Study co-author Dr Simon Lewis (UCL Geography) said the findings were good news for Amazon tree species, but warned that drought and over-exploitation of the forest remained major threats to the Amazon's future.

Dr Lewis said: "The past cannot be compared directly with the future. While tree species seem likely to tolerate higher air temperatures than today, the Amazon forest is being converted for agriculture and mining, and what remains is being degraded by logging, and increasingly fragmented by fields and roads.

"Species will not move as freely in today's Amazon as they did in previous warm periods, when there was no human influence. Similarly, today's climate change is extremely fast, making comparisons with slower changes in the past difficult.

"With a clearer understanding of the relative risks to the Amazon forest, we conclude that direct human impacts ? such as forest clearances for agriculture or mining ? should remain a focus of conservation policy. We also need more aggressive action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in order to minimise the risk of drought and fire impacts to secure the future of most Amazon tree species."

The 12 tree species used in the study are broadly representative of the Amazon tree flora. Samples were collected in Panama, Ecuador, Brazil, Peru, French Guiana and Bolivia.

To determine the age of each tree species researchers extracted and sequenced DNA, analysing the number of genetic mutations. Using a molecular clock approach and population genetic models they estimated how long it would take for each of the species to accumulate the observed number of mutations, providing a minimum age for each species. They determined that nine of the tree species had existed for at least 2.6 million years, seven for at least 5.6 million years, and three for more than 8 million years.

With reference to climatic events that have occurred since those tree species emerged, the authors inferred that the tree species had previously survived warmer climates. Air temperatures across Amazonia in the early Pliocene Epoch (3.6 million to 5 million years ago) were similar to Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) mid-range projections for the region in 2100. Air temperatures in the late Miocene Epoch (5.3 to 11.5 million years ago) were about the same as IPCC projections for the region in 2100 using some of the highest carbon-emission scenarios.

'It was horrific': First grade teacher kept kids calm

There was so much gunfire rocking the Sandy Hook Elementary school that one teacher doubted that she and her young students, locked in a bathroom, were going to survive.

A third grade student said the kids were so scared she thought she was going to throw up. Another said he hid in a closet.

The gunfire erupted during first grade teacher Kaitlin Roig's morning meeting with her 14 students, what she called "a happy, amazing part of the day."

That day quickly turned into a nightmare.

"Suddenly, I heard rapid fire... like an assault weapon. I knew something was wrong," Roig, 29, told "World News" anchor Diane Sawyer.

"It was horrific," she said. "I didn't think we were going to live."

LIVE UPDATES: Newtown, Conn., School Shooting

Alexis Wasik, an 8-year-old third grader, was startled when she heard someone rapidly firing off rounds inside another classroom. At first, she didn't know what was going on, but then she began to hear the sirens wail.

"We heard an ambulance and police officer come and everyone was a little scared crying and I felt actually a little sick and like I was going to throw up," she said. "Kids were crying, not really like screaming, but they were all huddling together. They felt so sick."

It was 9:41 a.m. when the first 911 call came into Connecticut State Police that multiple students at Sandy Hook Elementary School were locked in a classroom with a gunman. Adam Lanza killed 20 students and six adults at the school.

CLICK HERE for more photos from the scene.

When the shooting began, Roig said she quickly got up and closed her classroom door and ushered the children, all aged 6 and 7, into the class bathroom. She helped some climb onto the toilet so they could all fit. Roig said she then pushed a wheeled storage unit in front of the door.

"We all got in there. I locked us in," she said. "I don't know if [the gunman] came in the room... I just told them we have to be absolutely quiet."

"If they started crying, I would take their face and tell them, 'It's going to be OK,'" Roig continued. "I wanted that to be the last thing they heard, not the gunfire in the hall."

Roig said she just tried to stay strong for her students, but she didn't think they would make it out of the classroom alive.

"I thought we were all going to die," she said through tears. "I told the kids I love them and I was so happy they were my students... I said anyone who believed in the power of the prayer, we need to pray and those who don't believe in prayer" think happy thoughts.

Throughout the ordeal, Roig said her students were being very good and she tried to remain positive for them.

"They asked, 'Can we go see if anyone is out there... I just want Christmas... I don't want to die, I just want to have Christmas," she said.

READ: Connecticut School Shooting: What to Tell Your Kids

The gunfire didn't last very long, Roig said, but even when it stopped, she refused to take the kids out of the bathroom. When she heard knocking on the door a little while later, she said heard voices saying they were police officers, but she refused to open the door. Scared it was the gunman trying to lure them out, Roig told them to slide their badges under the bathroom door to prove their identities.

"I didn't believe them," she said. "I told them if they were cops, they could get the key... They did and then unlocked the bathroom."

Students who spoke to ABC News Radio told more stories of teachers who protected them during the shooting rampage. One 9-year-old boy said his class heard "a lot of bangs" and at first they thought a custodian had "knocked stuff down." Then they heard screaming.

"Police came in, said like 'Is he in here?' Then he ran out and then our teacher, somebody, yelled, 'get to a safe place.' So we went to the closet in the gym," the boy said. "The police were like knocking on the door and they're like 'we're evacuating people, we're evacuating people,' so we ran out."

After the police got Roig and her class out of their room, she said she and the children were taken to the nearby fire station, which had been set up as a staging area for parents to come pick up their kids.

That fire house, where Christmas wreaths and poinsettias are for sale, has been turned into a place of grief where frantic parents were either reuniting with their children or learning that their children are dead, or were still waiting for word.

Children stared wide-eyed as they watched state police troopers in body armor, holding raised rifles, quickly rush to secure the scene at their school. Parents said they had never been so panicked. One father, hoping to preserve a semblance of innocence, shielded his son's eyes with his forearm.

Wasik's mother said she found out about a shooting through the school's alert system, which sent her a message about a lockdown, and is still in disbelief.

"It just doesn't seem real," she said. "It feels like a nightmare. You drop your kids at school, hugs and kisses, have a good day, I'll see you later and see you at the end of the day and you never know.. in 20 minutes from now what's going to happen. And you count your blessing everyday for what you have."

ABC's Dan Harris, Aaron Katersky and Marcus Solis contributed to this report.
